"I'll never forget the yelling my parents did, when they expressed how disappointed they were in me, that I could do so much better," Allie said.
Allie Dowdle, 18, of Memphis started a Go Fund Me account, saying she is an 18-year-old high school senior with a 4.0 GPA, and her parents are “leaving me on my own to pay for college.” “My education has always been extremely important to me, which is why I am willing to share my story,” Dowdle’s Go Fund Me stated. How could my love for another person be wrong because of his skin color?
Which sounds like it’s sort of about race, after all.
Either way, Allie shouldn’t have to worry about her first year of school.
Old prejudices die hard, and it's up to the younger generation to finally bury the outdated beliefs of their parents.
Allie Dowdle, a white high school senior at a private school outside of Memphis, was crushed to experience intense backlash from her parents upon showing them a picture of her boyfriend Michael, who happens to be black.
In this, she learned a lot about the black culture and ended up marrying a man in the late 80’s and 90s.
I decided to ask her a few questions about any struggles they may have faced being an interracial couple.
And why would that make me unworthy of a future I’ve worked so hard for?
” Dowdle said she told her parents about a year ago that she was dating a man named Michael.
According to Allie's Go Fund Me page, the pair are still together, but date in secret.
She still lives with her parents because she says she has “nowhere else to live, and my dad has done everything in his power to make the world difficult for me.”Allie’s father Bill told the that cutting off Allie was “never about race,” but rather because she started dating Michael in secret and because she’s “spoiled.” But, he also admits that his daughter’s choice of suitor is not his “preference” because of “issues” involved with interracial dating in the South.
The Daily Mail identified her boyfriend as Michael Swift, who is listed as a freshman from Memphis on Clemson’s soccer team roster.
